Tungsten Carbide Bushing

A tungsten carbide bushing is not simply a hard sleeve. In pumps, drilling tools and rotating equipment, it often forms part of a controlled bearing or guiding system in which running clearance, shaft condition, alignment, installation fit and abrasive contamination can be just as important as the carbide grade itself.

Langsun Carbide manufactures custom tungsten carbide bushings for pumps, slurry equipment, drilling and downhole tools, oil and gas equipment, and other industrial systems where conventional metallic bushings may lose dimensional accuracy because of abrasive wear.

Most custom bushings are manufactured from customer drawings. For new or recurring applications, we also recommend reviewing the operating conditions behind the drawing—particularly when the existing bushing suffers from rapid bore wear, cracking, excessive clearance or shaft damage.

What Does a Tungsten Carbide Bushing Actually Do?

The function of a carbide bushing depends on the equipment in which it is installed.
A bushing may be used to:
• Guide or support a rotating shaft 
• Maintain a controlled radial clearance 
• Protect a shaft or housing from abrasive wear 
• Locate a moving component 
• Restrict leakage or flow through a close-clearance region 
• Guide a drill or cutting tool 
• Act as a replaceable wear component inside a more expensive assembly 
This distinction matters because two bushings with very similar dimensions may require different carbide grades, tolerances or surface conditions when their functions are different.
For example, a drill bushing mainly requires accurate tool guidance and dimensional stability, while a slurry-pump bushing must also tolerate abrasive particles passing through or close to the running interface.

Running Clearance, Fit and Shaft Condition

For many carbide-bushing failures, the most important question is not:
“Is the carbide hard enough?”
but:
“Is the bushing operating at the correct clearance after installation and during actual service?”
Running clearance can change because of:
• Manufacturing tolerances 
• Shaft runout 
• Misalignment 
• Press-fit installation 
• Housing deformation 
• Temperature change 
• Shaft deflection 
• Abrasive wear 
• Deposits or particles entering the clearance 
• Insufficient flushing or lubrication 
A clearance that becomes too small can increase rubbing, frictional heat or seizure risk.
A clearance that becomes too large can reduce shaft support, increase vibration and allow more abrasive particles into the interface.
The shaft surface condition should also be considered. A damaged, rough or incorrectly finished shaft can accelerate bushing wear even when the carbide itself is correctly specified.
This is why Langsun recommends evaluating the bushing and shaft as a working pair rather than treating the carbide component in isolation.
From Drawing to Finished Bushing
For custom carbide bushings, dimensional inspection is particularly important because the ID, OD and their relationship to the shaft and housing directly affect assembly and operation.
Langsun Carbide's inspection capabilities include dimensional inspection, hardness testing, density inspection, coercivity inspection, magnetic saturation inspection and metallographic examination.
Depending on the drawing and application, finished bushings may also require precision grinding and inspection of critical bore or outside dimensions before shipment.
