A mechanical face seal normally uses two precision sealing faces:

  • ● one associated with the rotating part of the assembly;
  • ● one associated with the stationary part.

In a liquid-lubricated mechanical seal, these faces operate with a very thin fluid film between them. This fluid film helps provide lubrication and remove frictional heat.

Depending on the seal design, tungsten carbide may be used as:

  • ● the rotating seal ring;
  • ● the stationary mating ring;
  • ● one member of a hard/soft face pair;
  • ● one member of a hard/hard face pair.

The purpose of the carbide component is therefore not simply to “stop leakage.”

Its job is to provide a wear-resistant, dimensionally stable working face within the complete mechanical seal assembly.
